Dr Gru

27 Aug

I was recently commissioned to do a final piece of a sketch I drew up of a mash up of Dr who and Despicable Me. That Birthday has now been and the present has been gifted so I can now share a scan of the image without spoiling a surprise 🙂

I am chuffed with how this one turned out as its just fun and light-heartedImage. Plus I think Lucys legs look cracking!

I currently have open slots for other mash up commissions so if you are interested please drop me a message. Keep your eyes peeled for the Bioshock and Kick Ass mash up coming soon!

Refurbished Coffee Table

26 Aug

In our flat we had a huge manly solid oak block coffee table. It was chunky and took up so much space! Once moved into our new house, it remained the same huge beast taking up its pride of place in front of the fire place blocking all the heat so it was time to look for a new table.

Having sunk most of our money into house hold items and DIY this year I thought why not look into a second hand furniture shop to give refurbishing a go and so we headed over to the YMCA in Tunbridge Wells. There is some beautiful huge old furniture in there but again the thing there is huge!

Eventually after a few Saturdays of looking Jonathan  stumbled across this horrible table for £10ImageI wasn’t sure what to do with it but for £10 why the hell not, even if it had a few little edges missing.

I thought on the idea of painting the table cream and doing some sort of black detailing and went to Homebase to get the things I needed, taking advantage of the Bank Holiday discounts they always have – I have never shopped there when everything is full priced!

Tools purchased: Cream and Black satin wood paint, clear wood varnish.

Then it was off to the sewing shop for a cushion pad and fabric as we wanted to make a comfortable bed for the cat to put on the bottom shelf.

Items purchased: Rectangle foam pad and 1.2 meters of upholstery fabric.

By this point the price has increased further than I had wanted to pay….£30 for the paint and varnish and an eye watering £30 for cushion pad supplies.

Nether the less I set about a light sanding of the table and applied the first layer of cream paint.

ImageI was already amazed how different our ugly table was looking!

Next up came a second layer and a day later after drawing up what writing I wanted on the top and in what style I cut the stencils for my lettering out and placed them on the top (turns out what I had thought was dead centre wasn’t….but I guess I will learn to measure better…ok measure at all rather than judge by eye, patience is not my strong point).

A night of drying later I made my cushion in the meantime, cutting the foam to size and sewing the fabric in place tightly over it.

And after all that work we have our new finished table which I am really happy with and think it looks amazing in the living room helping to lighten the space dramatically.

Although it ended up costing around £60 – £70 mark, I think something similar in the shops would have set us back over £100 so I am defo happy that Jonathan found the perfect table for this project 😀

Lesson Learnt – Don’t be too lazy for the post office

13 Aug

I have had a painful weekend of having to redo three commissions because I was too lazy to go to the post office to get any proof of postage etc from them for my work. This was a painful lesson to learn as after you have done a piece you really don’t fancy redoing them, let alone three. Luckly 2 of them were simple line drawings but the third was a pen and ink piece of motorbike racer Valentino Rossi which took ages and is still being redone.

But! on a positive note, I finished the Dr Gru commission but alas am not allowed to post a picture until after the recipients birthday (27th August) so until then I can fill this gap with a fun piece I had to do after thinking up the name of it.

Just a rough photo for now until I have time to get a clearer scan. But introducing: Despicaball Z o yes, super saiyan minions! This piece is up for grabs as the signed original for £30 inclusive of P&P and is pen and ink on thick Bristol board. Message or preferably email if interested in either this or a commission of your own! Image

Sketches and commissions

5 Aug

This past weekend I managed to get some time to be able to do some new drawings and sketches on top of entertaining two work collegiues for a light lunch of pad thai and a delicious pineapple tart tatin, coconut sorbet and a chilli caramel shard.

After recently watching Despicable Me, yes only just now! I didn’t know what I had been missing. I decided to first try and do a picture in a hellboy style. Although the final finished piece is not quite what I expected, I still love how it turned out and it sold instantly when I placed a photo on facebook.Image

Once that was received the lady liked it so much she requested a further commission of Valentino Rossi the motorcycle racer. It was a different style but again a few days work had a nice piece that she was happy with for her husband.

ImageFollowing on from that image, I remembered about a swap I had joined on swap-bot which I had forgotten about to do a powerpuff girls piece. I saw the person it was to go to liked The Walking Dead and I couldn’t say no to that opportunity! A few sketches later and an almost dropped pot of ink onto the sofa I had the image I wanted.

That leads me onto the last drawing of my weekend. I saw a t-shirt on that had minions stealing the tardis. My husbands first reaction was “OMG draw me Dr Gru” and so I sketched. And sketched. Eventually I have a picture I am happy with…I was careful not to go overboard on minions or trying to have all the characters involved. This was again placed on facebook and waited 5 minutes before another commission was made to complete the piece for his girlfriends birthday present.

I really am very excited to have so many commissions coming in for pieces that I am genuinely excited to be completing and loving putting my all into the final pieces!

Watch this space for the finalised Dr Gru by the end of the weekend!

If you have any mash up ideas then please do drop me a line and I will draw up a sketch to get the imagination firing on all pistons and see how many fun combinations can be produced! Think Sam and Dean working with Sherlock Holmes!
